Now that I am running more miles than before I have been trying different approaches to get my long run in during the week. When I was off of work the last two Mondays, I drove to the lake to run in the morning. This was a good solution but I don’t have any more Mondays off. I tried the CARA mid-week run on Wednesdays. When I went to the Montrose location, it took longer to drive there after work and there was quite a bit of traffic driving home from the lake. When I tried the Monroe location, there was so much walking I had to do to get to the location and then I still had a long train ride home. The other option that I tried was to go home after work and then run. It is difficult to find the motivation to run.
Since I wasn’t satisfied with any of my running adventures, I decided that today I would take my running clothes to work and run after work. My plan was to run 3 miles North and turn around and head back. I remembered the Garmin today but a satellite couldn’t be located because of all the tall building. Once at the lake, the Garmin worked. Since I have never run this way before, I was running all over the place trying to find the path. I finally picked up the path at Ohio Street beach. Once I ran over the North Avenue bridge, I took the wrong path and ended up on a dead end path and had to go down this grass hill to get on the real path.
I decided to try a different brand of gel during the run. It didn’t taste bad and most importantly it didn’t do bad things to my stomach. On the way back from my run, I discovered where I made my wrong turns on the path. I won’t make the same mistakes next time. Since I drove to my usual parking spot in the city, I didn’t have to endure the long train ride home.
As I was driving home tonight, I felt like Goldilocks and her adventures with the three bears. She had to try different beds and porridge until she found the one that was just right. I too feel like I had to try different running routines to find the one that was just right for now. Once I move back to the city, all my running activities are going to be so much easier.
