I think that I am finally getting my act together for my weekly bike ride. First of all, I was out of the house by 6:00 a.m., I had my Garmin on to tell me how far I was riding and I was wearing the appropriate clothing. Another benefit of organizing my shoes this week was that I found these light-weight slip-on sneakers that are perfect for bike riding. Also, I realized that a pair of my running shorts can do double duty as bike shorts. For one of the races I volunteered for last year, I received an orange T-Shirt which is very bright and long. I have found that this shirt works great for biking since it doesn’t ride up my back and I can easily be seen on my bike.
I did notice that the path was less crowded since I was on it earlier in the day. As I was riding on the path, I was reminded of the bike rides that I had in Germany and Austria when I was visiting relatives. On Sundays, taking a leisurely bike ride through the forest is a common activity in Europe. The main difference between riding in the states and in Europe is that in Europe there are always places to stop along the path to have a snack and something to drink. Knowing that we would have stop for a snack gave me the incentive to ride for hours.
I’m getting better at riding my bike but still need more experience. Hopefully, I will be ready to do the Bike the Drive next year which just happened to be today.
For me performing a sports activity outside is much more pleasurable than doing it inside. When the weather is not good, the treadmill works fine as a substitute for running inside. The same thing goes for using a stationary bike and riding outside. I think you get a much better workout riding outside due to the fact that you need to work different muscles to keep your balance on your bike. I also enjoy getting the fresh air and observing the changing scenery. At the end of my ride today, I saw a deer right next to path. This deer just stood at the side of the path and waited for me to pass. I slowed down when I saw the deer because I didn’t know what its next move was going to be. I was close to the deer when I passed it that I could have touched its nose. Now that is something you would never see inside your house.
After my ride today, I had all sorts of things planned for the rest of the day. I went to get passport pictures taken so I could renew my passport which had expired. You never know when an unexpected trip can come your way and you need that passport. After that I went out with my cousin for Fondue to celebrate her birthday. The restaurant was really empty so it felt like we had a private dining experience. After Fondue, we attended my son’s last Flute Recital. After being all over the place today, it will be good to just stay at home tomorrow and get things done around the house.
Tomorrow night is also the 2nd Hawks game at the Mad House. The first game last night was so intense that is took me awhile to recover emotionally. It will be interesting as to what kind of game it will be tomorrow night. You know what I will be doing tomorrow night.
