Tonight was my last group run in the 5K training program. As I mentioned last week, the runners are dwindling each week. Well, this week we hit our all time low. It was myself and another girl from my 5K group who showed up to run. On the flip side, there were five group leaders who showed up. In essence, there were 2 ½ group leaders for each of us. We had our clinic on running tips (also received a long-sleeved shirt) and then we all set out to run.
Since we going to run 2 miles tonight, the 7 of us (3 women and 4 men) all ran together to the park. I never would have thought that 47 degrees would be perfect weather to run but it is. At one time during our run there were 2 men in front, then us 3 women and 2 men behind us. I mentioned that it was like the women were surrounded by body guards. I must admit that I like the concept of having a male entourage running with me. It was such fun running with these people. With all the endorphins that one produces while running must be why the runners always seem to be such a happy bunch of people.
During our run, one of the group leaders invited the two of us to the last run of another group run program next Tuesday. The both of us decided to go. This running program is called the Drumstick Series since it prepares runners for a Turkey Trot. As we were stretching after our run, the group leaders asked us what was next for us. I told them my plans to take other programs to increase my running distance. This year, I have progressed through 3 or the 4 beginning training programs. At the beginning of each program, I thought I won’t make it through but I did with the encouragement of all the group leaders and the other runners.
It is interesting how my perspective has changed on running. Tonight I thought, “We are only doing 2 miles, no problem.” The thought of running 2 miles back in April seemed totally out of reach. I have learned through this running process that you just need to keep at it and it does get easier. I guess it’s a wrap for this year’s running program.
